WASSCE as administered through WAEC's Ghana national office runs on the same shared West African exam framework used across five countries, but carries genuinely Ghana-specific context, most notably the country's 2017 Free Senior High School policy, which removed tuition fees for public SHS nationwide and substantially expanded and diversified the cohort sitting WASSCE each year since. A Ghanaian candidate's specific SHS programme — one of seven tracks including General Science, General Arts, Business, Visual Arts, Home Economics, Agricultural Science, or Technical — fixes their elective subjects three years before the exam, while the same shared A1-to-F9 grading scale and 30:70 continuous-assessment-to-exam weighting apply as elsewhere in the WAEC region. Because Ghana's Free SHS-era cohort is considerably larger than it was before 2017, university aggregate cutoffs for competitive programmes have generally grown more demanding, making current admission data more relevant to a Ghanaian applicant than historical benchmarks from before the policy took effect.
