Toronto Metropolitan University, known as Ryerson University until April 2022, is a public university in downtown Toronto founded in 1948. It became the first North American post-secondary institution to rename itself specifically over its founding namesake's role in Canada's residential school system. TMU enrolls roughly 50,000 students and is home to DMZ, a startup incubator ranked the world's top university-based incubator by UBI Global in 2018, with a network of over 4,700 alumni companies. The university climbed to 720th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, its largest year-over-year rise among Canadian institutions.
TMU became the first post-secondary institution in North America to change its name specifically to address a legacy of colonialism, renaming itself from Ryerson University to Toronto Metropolitan University in April 2022 after an eighteen-month Standing Strong Task Force review found its former namesake, Egerton Ryerson, to be one of the architects of Canada's residential school system. The university's DMZ startup incubator, founded in 2010, was ranked the world's number-one university-based business incubator by UBI Global in 2018 and has since produced a network of more than 4,700 alumni startups. TMU climbed from the 801-850 band to 720th in the QS World University Rankings 2026, a rise the university has publicized as the largest of any Canadian institution that year. Its downtown Toronto campus places students inside the city's commercial core, including an athletic centre built inside the former Maple Leaf Gardens hockey arena.
