Universidad de Alcala, founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros, occupies a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic campus in Alcala de Henares near Madrid. It enrolls around 28,000 students, draws roughly a fifth of them from abroad, and is best known internationally for hosting Spain's annual Premio Cervantes literary award ceremony.
Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros founded the university in 1499 as a purpose-built academic city, and UNESCO declared the historic campus a World Heritage Site in 1998 in recognition of that original planned-university-town model. The university's Paraninfo hall has hosted the Premio Cervantes ceremony, presided over by the King and Queen of Spain, every April since the prize's creation in 1976. Alcala de Henares is also the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes, giving the university's home city a direct literary link that the institution formalizes through its annual Cervantes Prize tradition.
