Chang Gung University in Taoyuan, Taiwan, was founded in 1987 by the Wang family of the Formosa Plastics Group specifically to supply trained staff for the family's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital system. It remains heavily weighted toward medicine and health sciences, with the Formosa Plastics Group Museum located on its own campus as a marker of that corporate origin.
The university was established in April 1987 as Chang Gung Medical College by the Wang family, founders of the Formosa Plastics Group, initially to train medical staff for the family's own Chang Gung Memorial Hospital system before broadening into other fields. It added engineering and management programs only in 1993, and did not take the name Chang Gung University until 1997, a sequence that still shapes its academic balance toward health sciences today. The Formosa Plastics Group Museum sits on the university's own 37-hectare Guishan campus, a physical reminder of the conglomerate that founded and continues to fund the institution.
