👤 Who Should Take This Exam?

ENEM is aimed primarily at Brazilian high school seniors and recent graduates who want to use their score for admission to public universities through SISU, for scholarships at private institutions through ProUni, or for subsidized student loans through FIES. Adults who finished secondary school years earlier can also take it, since there is no age limit and no requirement to be currently enrolled in school. International applicants are not the primary audience, but Brazilian citizens abroad and the dozens of Portuguese universities that accept ENEM scores under bilateral agreements mean some candidates sit the exam specifically for study opportunities outside Brazil. Because ENEM also functions as Brazil's de facto national school-leaving assessment, some students take it simply to benchmark their own academic performance without an immediate plan to enroll in a specific program.

How Scoring Works

Objective questions are scored using Item Response Theory (TRI), which weights questions by difficulty. The essay is scored manually by two examiners on five specific competencies.

🏆 Minimum Scores for Top Universities

There is no official pass/fail threshold set by INEP; the lowest possible score on each of the four objective sections is 0, though in practice very few candidates score near either extreme because of how the TRI (Item Response Theory) scoring model works. Competitive federal universities and medical programs through SISU often require averages well above 700 out of 1000 per section, while other public and private programs admit students with averages closer to 450-550. ProUni scholarships have their own separate minimum, requiring an average score of at least 450 across the objective sections plus a non-zero essay score, since a zero essay disqualifies a candidate from ProUni regardless of their other results. Because SISU cutoffs shift every admission cycle based on how many candidates apply to each specific course and campus, the realistic 'minimum' score for a given student depends heavily on which program and university they target.
