KCSE is Kenya's Form 4 secondary-leaving exam under the outgoing 8-4-4 education system, administered by KNEC and used directly by KUCCPS for university programme placement — though the exam itself is being progressively phased out as Kenya completes its transition to the Competency-Based Curriculum. Following a significant 2023 grading reform, a candidate's overall mean grade specifically combines compulsory Mathematics, one compulsory language subject, and their five other best-performing subjects out of the seven to nine typically entered, meaning subjects beyond that counted seven simply don't factor into the final result. Unlike CBC's newer KJSEA, which carries a student's earlier Grade 6 assessment forward into a later combined calculation, KCSE remains a single terminal exam with no multi-year continuity — an entire secondary academic record compresses into one Form 4 exam period. As CBC's own cohorts continue progressing toward senior secondary, KCSE's remaining relevance is a genuinely temporary, transitional feature of Kenya's current dual-system education landscape.
