For students aiming to study in Nigeria, TETFund Academic Staff Training and Development (AST&D) Overseas Scholarship is a partially funded scholarship from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The award covers currently-enrolled foreign scholars continue receiving their existing tuition and stipend support through to programme completion, while new AST&D beneficiaries are being directed to local Nigerian institutions instead; a narrow exception remains for postgraduate courses that have no Nigerian equivalent, and PhD candidates already studying locally can still apply for a short three-to-six-month overseas research attachment. This 2025 policy shift means the overseas track is effectively closed to new full-degree applicants outside those two narrow exceptions. and is open to masters and phd students studying fields not locally available in nigerian institutions (for the remaining foreign-study exceptions); all fields for local training. The scholarship runs for 1-2 years. Eligibility is generally based on only confirmed academic staff of TETFund beneficiary institutions who are nominated by their own university, polytechnic or college of education can apply, and since the foreign-study component was suspended in January 2025, new nominations are being channelled toward local Nigerian postgraduate programmes rather than universities abroad. Staff seeking one of the remaining foreign-study exceptions must show the course they need has no equivalent offering in Nigeria.
